Primary election set for next Tuesday

Voters will head to the polls next Tuesday, Aug. 5 to pare down candidates in the primary election.
Included will be races at the county ,state and national levels.

Polls will open at 7 a.m. and close at 7 p.m. on Tuesday. Results will be posted on line at “taylornews.org.”

In county races, only two races will be competitive. Gary House of Sedan is challenging Russell D. Canaday of Independence for the position of District Judge, Dist. 14, Div. 3. Both are Republicans and the winner in this race will face Robert W. Lattin of Independence, a Democrat, in the Nov. 4 general election.

The other race involves incumbent Chautauqua County Sheriff Frank Green of Chautauqua being challenged by Perry A. Russell of rural Peru. Both are Republicans and no Democrats filed for this position.

Other county candidates running with no opposition will be: Dist. Magistrate Judge David A. Casement of Sedan; Cammie Farner of Niotaze for county clerk; Lisa A. Hudson of Sedan for country treasurer; Laura C. Beeson of Sedan for register of deeds; Danny Williams of Sedan, Republican for Dist. 2 county commissioner; Jack Carpenter, Republican for county commissioner, Dist. 3; and Larry Markle of Coffeyville, Republican for county attorney.

Running for state representative from the 12th Dist. will be incumbent Jeff King, a Republican, and his challenger will be Sandra K. Frisco, Independence, a Democrat.

Running for state representative from the 79th district will be Kasha Kelley, Arkansas City, a Republican incumbent, and her Democratic challenger will be Gene Burr, Arkansas City.

Derek Schmidt, Republican state senator, will run unopposed. Schmidt resides at Independence.

For U.S. Senator, incumbent Pat Roberts will be on the ballot as the lone Republican and Democratic voters may choose from a slate of two: Lee Jones of Overland Park or Jim Slattery of Topeka.

For U.S. Representative, Todd Tiahrt of Goddard is the only Republican on the ballot, and his challenger is Donald Betts Jr., a Democrat from Wichita.

Numerous township offices also will be on Tuesday’s ballot.

Because the Sedan Times-Star now is printed on Tuesday evenings, there will be no results reported next week. However, results will be posted online at “taylornews.org” as they become available.
