Sedan Public Library promoting financial literacy
For the third year in a row, Kansas Libraries and the Kansas State Treasurer’s office are collaborating to promote financial literacy. During Sedan’s Summer Reading, families can register to win a $529. Learning Quest college savings account.
Last year, seven children - ranging in age from 18 months to 15 years old - won a $500. Learning Quest college savings account. This year, the amount of the account has been raised, appropriately, to $529. for each winner. In addition to awarding seven accounts, on in each of the seven library districts across the state, another award of $529, will go toward new book purchases or other library needs to one randomly selected participating library.
“The partnership between our office and libraries across the state has been a great way to communicate to families how important it is to start saving early,” said Kansas State Treasurer Lynn Jenkins, CPA. “Keeping children engaged in learning during the summer months helps students lay a foundation for success in the fall. Providing a firm financial foundation by investing in a 529 plan today helps families prepare for the possibilities awaiting their student after high school.”
Registration slips for the Learning Quest drawing are available near the check-out counter at the Sedan Public Library; families can ask their local librarian for more information. The program runs from June first at the beginning of the library’s Summer Reading program through July 13. Winners will be announced in early August and presented with a $529 Learning Quest account at the library’s end-of-summer reading event.
The three Kansas 529 plans recently reached $2 billion in assets under management. Created by the State Legislature in 1999, the 529 plans have grown to include more than 116,000 accounts.
