Yellow Brick Road Festival events planned

The Sedan area will be filled with activities and fun for all ages over the Memorial Day weekend. The Yellow Brick Road Festival, Kurtis Art Plaza Art Show, Mountain Oyster Fry Cookoff, Chautauqua Hills Blues Festival, and a fun run will highlight the weekend festivities.

The Sedan Area Chamber of Commerce will sponsor the Yellow Brick Road Parade on Main Street at 10 a.m. on Saturday morning, May 24. Wizard of Oz characters, Mrs. Kansas, fire trucks, Boy Scout troops, and more will make their way through the parade. Individuals, churches, clubs, and businesses are encouraged to enter floats for the Yellow Brick Road parade. Call Jeannie at the chamber office at 725-4033 to enter a float. Prize money will be awarded.

The Sedan Area Economic Development Committee (SAEDC) will host a fun filled day at the Kurtis Arts Plaza on Saturday, May 24.

The public is invited to come out and participate in the Side Walk Art Contest sponsored by SAEDC, dart throw sponsored by the Sedan Willing Workers 4-H Club, and ring toss and dummy roping sponsored by Farm Bureau. The 3 Rivers Mussel Loaders will be demonstrating guns, fire starting and general skills for mountain men. The Sedan Community Wide Vacation Bible School and the CREW will be doing face painting, the duck pond and other fun games. The Sedan FFA will have Guitar Hero in their booth. All games and contests begin at 10 a.m.

Lynn Black will doing Zoomba from 11-11:30 a.m.

Be sure to stop by and purchase some fantastic pies, cakes and brownies at Pleasant Valley Manor’s bake sale. These items are being made by the super cooks that are residents there.

The Sedan Music Department will have a concession stand featuring hotdogs, hamburgers, drinks and more beginning at 11 a.m. Come out and support the organizations that are making Sedan a better place to live.

Come inside and enjoy the great activities at the Kurtis Arts Plaza Studio sponsored by SAEDC. You will enjoy an exhibit of photos from the annual photo contest, an art show with the best of local art and jewelry, blues music featuring the Melodivas and of course the Mountain Oyster Cook Off, where you can be a judge during the Melodivas performance for only $6.

The Kurtis Arts Plaza in Sedan is accepting entries for the Second Annual Mountain Oyster Fry Cookoff on Saturday at 202 S. Douglas in Sedan. Cash prizes will be given for first, second, and third places for best mountain oysters and beans. Contestants will be judged on flavor, texture and appearance. An award will also be given for best booth, so be creative! All awards and winners will be chosen by People’s Choice votes.

Kurtis Arts Plaza will provide one gallon of pre-soaked beans for each team. Nothing may be prepared in advance other than spices. Contestants may start setting up at noon; cooking will take place from 1-4 p.m. Tasting will be from 2-5 p.m. and all awards will be presented at 5:30 p.m. Each team shall consist of 2-4 people. Each team must provide a minimum of 15 pounds of mountain oysters.

Entry fee for each team is $25. Deadline for entries is midnight on May 21. Entry forms are available from Terry Ricketts, Studio in the Hills, or Floyd’s Market. If you have questions call 620-725-3322.

Artists are invited to send snapshots or slides of their work for entry in the Kurtis Art Plaza Art Show on Saturday at 202 S. Douglas, Sedan. Children are invited to participate in the Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest following the Yellow Brick Road parade on May 24.

The First Yellow Brick Road 5K Fun/Run Walk will start at 8 a.m. on Saturday at Main and Chautauqua streets in Sedan. Prizes will be awarded to male and female in the following age groups: under 15; 15; 15-20; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60+.

Pre-registration is $10 which will include a t-shirt and registration on day of race is $12. This event is sponsored by the USD286/Sedan Recreation Commission.

The Melodivas bluegrass music will be the afternoon featured entertainment at the Kurtis Art Plaza in Sedan on Saturday, along with the art show and mountain oyster cookoff. Bring your comfortable lawn chair and enjoy art, music and good food.

The Melodivas, a four-piece all-female acoustic group from Wichita, are heading into spring with a full schedule of performances. The band formerly known as the Prairie Chicks features Dulcie Guinty on mandolin, Charolett Knapic on autoharp, Shannon Littlejohn on ukulele and Nikki Moddelmog on guitar. Strong lead vocals and tight harmonies are hallmarks of the group, whose sound is informed by folk with a tinge of Tin Pan Alley.
