Kopfman is named USD 286 Teacher of the Year
Cheryl Kopfman was announced this week as USD 286 Teacher of the Year for 2007-08.
Kopfman teaches fifth grade at Sedan Elementary School and has worked in the district since 1997 when she started working in the junior high resource room.
She began her teaching career in 1979 in Goodland where she taught for four years. She was special education teacher for High Plains in Ulysses for four years, and taught fourth grade in Lyndon, Kan., for seven years. She has taught in the fifth grade at Sedan since the year 2000.
Kopfman will have completed her 26th year of teaching at the end of this year. She has a B.A. in elementary education from Wichita State University and a M.S. in special education behavior disorders from Hays State University.
Cheryl believes that every student has the right to learn in a safe and caring room. She believes it is not only important to teach academic skills but also social skills in order for students to be successful.
“I hope to convey to students that to have integrity is a great accomplishment and that is what I hope to model for my students,” said Kopfman.
Cheryl has been married to her husband, Jack, for 26 years. The couple has two daughters, Kammi and Stephani, both of Manhattan. The Kopfmans reside in Caney.
