Sedan Alumni Banquet slated for May 24
By Mike Todd
Plans are currently underway for the 118th Alumni Banquet. The Banquet will held be on Saturday, May 24 at noon. Once again the location will be the Sedan Fair Building at the City Park.
The Alumni Committee felt that a noon meeting gives more opportunity for our Sedan Alumni to bring their spouses and children. This decision was based upon the belief that many Alumni drive considerable distances and want to include their families. Even though we have not had any children attend as of this date, we want our Alumni to know their families are welcome.
The Committee also felt that a noon meeting would provide an alcohol free event plus give Alumni the opportunity to visit with other Alumni from their era and still drive home before dark! It also gives those classes celebrating anniversaries more time to celebrate and reminisce during their own scheduled events later in the evening.
The Class of 1948 will be holding their reunion at the Banquet, and a table has been reserved close to the handicap parking. As of yet, the Alumni Committee does not have any other information.
The Class of 1953 will be holding their reunion at the Banquet as well. We believe that Frank and Vera Mae Miller would be the appropriate contact. They also have a table reserved for the Banquet as well as a section of the Fair Building to hold their Class Reunion after the meal.
There are several other classes planning their reunions. The class of 1958 will celebrate their 50th reunion at the Dudley Foster residence at 2170 Indian Road beginning at 2 p.m. For more information please call 620-725-3219. The class also plans to ride in the parade, if there is one! If there isn’t a parade, I’m afraid this Class will create their own – so please be warned about this group! The class of 1958 will have a table reserved for the Banquet.
The class of 1968 has reserved a table for the Banquet. They are also planning their reunion to meet at the 4-H Building from 2-4 p.m. The 68′ers would also like to extend an invitation to any other classes from the same era. The Class of 1968 will also host a dance on Saturday evening at the same 4-H Building. The dance will begin at 8:30 p.m. and will end at ? - which means we’d like to stay up late but will probably have the lights out way too soon for our younger alumni! None the less come to the Fair Grounds on Saturday night for a stroll down memory lane! No one under 50 will be allowed to participate in a mosh pit!
Dance to the “Mystic Knights” Saturday night at the 4-H Building from 8:30-?
The Mystic Knights and Friends this year are Larry King, Tim House, Edwin Bowman, Glen Andrews, Steve Graves and Mike Sullivan.
The Class of 1973 will hold their 35th reunion on the same afternoon following the Banquet. They will meet at the home of Dave and Debbie Chrisman at 506 W. Cherokee. As the editor for this Alumni article, I’m betting this will be the best party by a long shot! “Be there or be square!” I’m certain many of the 68′ers will finish the day at this “event!” For more information on their reunion please check out website www.shsclassof73.com Notice the Class of 1973 uses a web site as a point of reference – so if you must use a phone – you probably aren’t invited. Wonder when the age of technology began?
The Class of 1988 will hold their 20th reunion on June 2 at noon at the Farm Bureau Building. Please contact Brad Dyer at 913-940-1764 for more information
As you may remember, last year the Alumni Committee raised the ticket prices to $15 a person and we anticipate that cost remaining the same until at least 2009. The cost of a child’s ticket is $10 (and it will not change). Children under five are free. This cost will remain in effect until Saturday, May 17. After that date the cost will be $20 until Friday, May 23. The day of the banquet the cost will be $25.
Tickets are available at the First National Bank of Sedan, (the caterers) The Green Door, the Bank of Sedan and Sedan High School. Tickets may be reserved over the phone by calling Sedan High School at 725-3186. Tickets reserved over the phone may be paid for at the door. However, no-shows will be billed for tickets that are not cancelled by Thursday evening the 22nd.
If any other classes are meeting or we can provide any information, please contact Scott Hills at 725-3186.
The Alumni Committee consists of Rob Dickens President, Dave Chrisman Vice-President and Scott Hills as Secretary/Treasurer. If any one is interested in becoming a committee member, please come to the Banquet and offer your services. This current committee has been in place for 6 years and they are looking to retire.
The Alumni Committee would like to ask that all classes having specific reunions to begin a new tradition called the “Sedan Alumni Reunion Fund.” We would like to ask each class to help us create a fund to financially assist all types of Blue Devils’ activities and athletics. We would propose that each Class Reunion take up a collection from each member and donate that sum to the school – in the name of your class.
Some of the things that this new “Reunion Fund” would help fund could be: Boys’ Blue Sports Blazers, Select Choirs’ costumes, Scholar Bowl Teams’ new shirts, Golf teams’ new bags. It could also assist the ag students with their annual trip to the National Convention in Louisville, Ky. It could be as simple as purchasing wood and supplies for our tech trades classes. The volleyball girls’ need new jackets and sports bags – where does it end? As you can see, the list is never ending, and we cannot provide all the things to which our school would like to have but simply cannot replace. As the future trends of educational funding are uncertain, your assistance will be a major focus of steady income and assistance.
We are the Sedan Blue Devils – our students and faculty take pride in that fact! We are proud to be Blue Devils and your support of the “Reunion Fund” will help us remain proud Blue Devils! The best way you can support our Alumni Association and Sedan High School is to come to your banquet. When it comes down to it, if you don’t attend – there won’t be a banquet!
I would like to take this opportunity to thank a 1961 SHS Alumni. This person kindly assisted our Blue Devil Marching Band by donating over $2000 dollars to help fund the Cotton Bowl Trip. He also established an annual $1000 scholarship to a deserving Blue Devil Band member. We appreciate what this Alum has done for our school. The kids who traveled to Dallas got to take a trip of a life time!
We appreciate any and all of our SHS Alumni. Please stop by our school and take a look around – it will bring backs all kinds of memories and feelings.
