Permission is being sought by the West Elk USD 282 Board of Education to hold an election later this year to finance construction of a new districtwide elementary school.

A public notice, printed on Page 3B today’s Prairie Star, contains the board’s intent to apply to the Kansas State Board of Education for permission to hold such an election for a project in an amount not to exceed $5,550,000. Read more

A reconfiguring of education in the West Elk school distrct and construction of a new elementary school are being proposed by the USD 282 Board of Education and a 24-member community committee.

Planning for this concept has been underway for several months and Supt. Corey Reece gave a report at Monday night’s board meeting saying this plan would save money over the way the district currently operates its three campuses. Read more

A public hearing is set for next Monday night, May 18, in Howard to discuss a possible bond issue to finance school facility improvements.

The public hearing will be held at 7:30 p.m. as a special meeting of the USD 282 Board of Education and will be held in the district office on the West Elk campus. Read more

Three area high schools will award seniors their high school diplomas this weekend.  The class of 2009 will graduate this weekend at Sedan High School, West Elk High School, and Burden-Central High School.
