HOWARD — Rumors are flying this week after an 18-wheeler truck overturned south of Howard along K-99 highway last Thursday, resulting in closure of the highway for three days.

Law enforcement officials at all levels are maintaining a no-comment status and even the Kansas Department of Transportation said they were not provided with specifics — only an order to close the highway.

fall-basketCelebrating its 20th year will be the Elk River Festival on Saturday, Sept. 26, in Howard.
Most events will take place on the lawn of the Elk County Courthouse following the parade.

This year’s theme is “Honoring Our Past - Promoting Our Future,” and will be tied in to the dedication of the new All Veterans Memorial at Jackson Park.  A dedication ceremony will be held at the memorial at 8:30 a.m., and will feature the Elk County Community Choir.

howardbankbuildingA proposed renovation of the historic, old bank building in downtown Howard was described by its new owners, Tom and Myra Devlin, at a meeting of the Howard Chamber of Commerce last Tuesday.
Chamber president Benji Crupper introduced the Devlins who gave the following update on the project.

Tom Devlin expressed that he and his wife would like the Howard community to become involved in the renovation and plans for the bank building at the corner of Washington and Wabash streets. The Devlins put a new roof on the property this month to halt further deterioration, but noted that the entire building would need extensive repairs. Discussion followed about repairs and possible uses for the building. Read more
