Elk County will benefit from significant economic development thanks to an agreement announced today (Oct. 8th) between the Caney River Wind Project and the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA).

The Caney River Wind Project was developed by Lenexa-based TradeWind Energy, and will be constructed, owned and operated by its partner, Enel North America (ENA), a subsidiary of Enel Green Power.

To most local residents, “Hubbell’s Rubble” is just a pile of scrap metal, creatively fashioned into Jerry Hubbell’s idea of artwork.

Some may even call Hubbell a sculptor when they see him welding on an old bicycle or piece of farm equipment and squnting one eye to make sure it turns into something recognizable.

web-jerry-hubbellRegardless, the vacant lot loaded with Hubbell’s Rubble gains lots of attention for the community which boasts it as a tourist attraction on the town website.

But last week, Hubbell raised some eyebrows when his handmade collection of metal artwork gained the attention of the Wall Street Journal. A front page article featured several Kansas roadside sculptors, each one no doubt smiling at the honor.

A Wichita truck driver was injured when the semi-truck he was driving went off the side of K-99 highway one mile south of Howard on Monday morning, Aug. 24.prairietruckwreck1

The Kansas Highway Patrol says Larry A. Schuessler, 52, of Wichita, was southbound in 2003 Peterbuilt truck, which was carrying a load of paper products, when it dropped a tire off the roadway, pulling the truck into a ditch. The truck rested on its side.

Schuessler was taken to the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka for medical treatment.

K-99 highway was narrowed to one lane for most of Monday as crews removed the cargo from the semi and placed the truck upright.

Elk Konnected’s Youth Development Action Team will be hosting a free day camp for 7 to 12 year old children.  Konnected Kids will be held Tuesday through Thursday from 8 a.m. to noon.

Seven high school students will serve as camp counselors throughout the five week program.  Campers will have the opportunity to participate in outdoor activities, eat lots of good snacks, socialize with other campers and complete a variety of art and craft projects. Read more

West Elk High School senior Sonny Lee ended his track career Saturday with a slight dose of heartbreak: he finished in second place in the class 2A men’s 200 meter dash by a mere .03 of one second.

Lee settled for runner-up status after posting the top time in the preliminary round.  However, Manuel Acevedo of Sublette High School beat Lee to the finish line in 22.33 seconds while Lee came in second at 22.36 seconds.
