A final winner in Tuesday’s race for Chautauqua County Commissioner was not determined in Tuesday balloting.
Goff Searl received 104 votes and Sunny Young pulled 102, while Joseph A. Sutton garnered 56 votes. The Chautauqua County Clerk’s office reported this morning (Wednesday) that six provisional ballots will need to be canvassed on Friday which could affect the outcome of this race.
Inaccurate information was released to the media Tuesday night by the Chautauqua County Clerks office, indicating that Young had won the primary race. Prairie Star was notified today (Wednesday) and stopped its printing to make this change. Check the taylornews.org website on Friday to learn who won this primary election. The winner of this Republican primary will be listed on the Nov. 2 general election ballot with no opponent.
In addition to the Chautauqua County Commission race, there were no other contested races that were specific to Chautauqua County, although many races will be decided in the November general election.
In Elk County, there were no contested races other than a district judge’s race that involves several other counties.
Republican Douglas C. Ritz, rural Fredonia, will meet Democrat Gus Jones, rural Elk City, on the Nov. 2 general election ballot for First Dist. County Commissioner in Elk County. Otherwise, all other elected county officials will stand for election in 2012.
In other races affecting Kansans, Jerry Moran claimed a close victory over Todd Tiahart to gain the GOP nomination in the U.S. Senate race. Moran pulled 159,658 votes votes while Tiahrt got 143,816 with 10 precincts still out this morning. Moran will meet Democrat Lisa Johnson who pulled ahead late in the night to win the Democratic party for U.S. Senate.
In the U.S. House of Representatives, Fourth Dist., race, it was Mike Pompeo who jumped ahead early in the evening and kept that edge over his closest rival, Jean Schodorf. Pompeo garnered 30,696 votes to Schodorf’s 18,938. Other candidates were: Wink Hartman 18,124, Jim Anderson 10,165 and Paij Rutschman, 1,575 votes.
Pompeo will meet Democrat Raj Goyle in the November election. Goyle won a landslide victory over Robert Tillman to win the Democrat primary.
Other races of interest: Derek Schmidt easily defeated Ralph De Zago for the Republican nomination for Kansas Attorney General, and Schmidt will meet incumbent Steve Six in the November election.
Kris Kobach will be the Republican nominee for Secretary of State and will meet Democrat Chris Biggs in the November general election.
For commissioner of insurance, it was Sandy Praeger who defeated David Powell for the GOP nomination.
Sam Brownback easily won the Republican nomination for governor and should claim a November election to the state’s top office.
For district judge in the 13th district which includes Elk County, Jan Satterfield won the Republican nomination.
