LAWRENCE — Students from 14 Kansas high schools will be honored Monday, Oct. 26, by the University of Kansas Alumni Association and KU Endowment. Students from Butler, Elk, and Greenwood counties have been selected, including Kayla Harrod, Sarah Taliaferro, and Tanner Weber, all of West Elk High School.
A total of 121 seniors from high schools in Butler, Elk and Greenwood counties will be recognized for their academic achievements and named Kansas Honor Scholars at a 7 p.m. reception program at the El Dorado Civic Center, 201 E. Central St.
Honored students from Chautauqua County will be announced in next week’s Prairie Star. The Kansas Honors Program began in 1971 and has honored more than 107,000 students. Scholars rank in the top 10 percent of their high school senior classes and are selected regardless of occupational plans or higher-education goals.
During the ceremony, each student will receive an American Heritage Dictionary, in both hardback and electronic versions, presented by Marcus Hick, coordinator of alumni programs for the KU Alumni Association.
Rick Ginsberg, dean of KU’s School of Education, will speak to the students and their parents and guests.
Honored students will be guests of the alumni association and KU Endowment; parents and area alumni are welcome to attend.
Community volunteers collect reservations, coordinate details and serve as local contacts for the event. Scott Ennis, El Dorado, will be site coordinator. Steven Ensign, Eureka, will be coordinator for Elk and Greenwood counties.
The Kansas Honors Program is made possible through the KU Endowment and proceeds from the Jayhawk License Plate program.
