Bargain hunters will get their pockets full and sightseers will get an eye full when they visit the 2nd Annual Kan-Okla 100-Mile Highway Sale — a multi-city event bringing together various towns and tourist attractions — on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12.
The Kansas cities of Sedan, Independence, Caney, Tyro, Dearing and Coffeyville along with the Oklahoma cities of Lenapah, Dewey, Nowata, Copan and Bartlesville will see hundreds of yard sales in those towns as well as other events designed to lure tourists and bargain hunters. So far, the towns of Sedan, Independence, Caney, Dewey, Coffeyville and Nowata are planning citywide rummage sales with free city maps available at local convenience stores.
Other organizations are planning events in an attempt to bring dollars to the southeast Kansas and northeast Oklahoma region. Among the other activites on the 2nd Annual Kan-Okla 100 Mile Highway Sale schedule:
• Tyro Christian Church Car Show: Tyro Christian Church will hold its 7th Annual Car Show on the church grounds, located on U.S. 166 highway. As many as 200 classic and custom vehicles are anticipated for this year’s show, which is regarded as the largest gathering of custom and classic cars in the region. This year’s car show coincides with the church’s 100th anniversary celebration. David Bycroft, TCC pastor, will serve as the announcer during the trophy presentation. The theme this year is “Happy Days.”
Tyro Community Christian School will be selling breakfast. There will be free coffee until 10 a.m. On the lunch menu they will be selling barbecue pork sandwiches as their specialty. Music from the 1950s and ’60s will provide entertainment along with previous car show videos being shown in the auditorium throughout the day. The public is invited to come out and view the cars, enjoy the music and refreshments.
• Caney Valley Antique Power Association Flea Market: The Caney Valley Antique Power Association’s grounds on U.S. 75 north of the U.S. 75-166 junction near Havana will be buzzing with flea market vendors. Dozens of vendors will have their wares set up on the grounds for two days of bargain shopping.
Restrooms, showers and electric hookups are available. The club will have food concessions for sale on both days.
To schedule an electric setup at the CVAPA grounds, call (620) 289-4351 to reserve a spot. Limited electric is available for campers.
• Brisket dinner sponsored by SEK Blue Star Mothers: The newly-formed SEK Blue Star Mothers will sponsor a brisket dinner at Wark Memorial Park in Caney on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 11-12.
• Caney Valley Historical Society: The Caney Valley Historical Society will sponsor a booth set up near the gazebo at Wark Memorial Park in Caney during the 100-mile Garage Sale on Saturday, Sept. 12. The booth will open at 7:30 a.m. and shoppers can stop by and purchase two doughnuts or cookies and choice of coffee and orange juice for $1.50. There will also be garage sale items available for purchase.
The organization will also sell solar lanterns, “A Light to Remember,” that can be placed on graves of loved ones. The lanterns will sell for $15 each and includes a metal shepherd’s hook for hanging of the lamp, one stake and an installed rechargeable battery. The light may also be purchased at the Caney Valley Historical Museum in downtown Caney, open Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. The flickering amber LED light gives the illusion of a flame, without the hazard. It comes with a rechargeable battery during the day that automatically turns the light on at night.
• Tyro bake sale and rummage sale: The Tyro Volunteer Fire Auxiliary will have a rummage and bake sale on Friday, Sept. 11, and Saturday, Sept. 12 from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. both days. Donations of clothing, furniture, and other items for the rummage sale are needed by Sept. 9 and may be dropped off at the old Tyro school gym location at 405 N. East Street.
Food items for the bake sale may be dropped off the days of the sale. Items do not need to be priced and can also be picked up if needed. Cash donations will also be accepted.
• Tourist attractions: Visitors to the southeast Kansas/northeast Oklahoma region are also invited to visit the tourist attractions, retail shops and unique eateries. Among the tourist attractions that will be open on one or both days of the two-day event include Caney Safari Zoological Park, Little House on the Prairie Historic Site, Caney Valley Historical Society Museum, Emmett Kelly Museum, Independence Museum, Riverside Park and Ralph Mitchell Zoo in Independence, aquatic parks in Independence and Coffeyville, Coffeyville’s Brown Mansion, Dalton Defenders Museum in Coffeyville, Coffeyville Aviation Heritage Museum, Historic Dewey Hotel Museum, Tom Mix Museum, Price Tower in downtown Bartlesville, Bartlesville Area History Museum, Frank Phillips Home, Woolaroc Ranch and Museum, the Glass Mansion in Nowata and Nowata Historical Museum, and more.
