Mark L. Morton of Elgin, Kan., was sentenced to 68 months in prison after being convicted of kidnapping and molestation of minors in Chautauqua County. Morton was issued the prison sentence in a hearing in Chautauqua County Court on Sept. 2. Read more

web-mertesFifteen year-old Sedan resident Kyla Mertes is not the typical high school student. As a volunteer with her local fire department, Mertes chose to finish her high school education entirely online, allowing her the flexibility she needed to continue volunteer work.

Mertes and her family are volunteers with the Peru Rural Fire Department. As a member of the volunteer junior fire department and the Junior Community Emergency Response Team, Mertes is often called out with her family to assist with fires on a regular basis. In order to stay active as a member, Mertes sought out a program that would allow her the opportunity to complete her school work when it was most convenient for her.

World League Wrestling, in conjunction with the Chautauqua County Boy Scouts, will be coming on Saturday, Sept. 12 to the Sedan junior high (old) gymnasium.  The doors open at 6 p.m. and matches start at 7 p.m.

The event will feature six matches, including an “Eight Man Battle Royal.”  Headliners include “Million Dollar Man” Ted Dibiase and the “World’s Strongest Woman” Becca Swanson.  Eight time NWA World Champion Harley Race will also be on hand.  In addition, there will be an autograph session at the Green Door Cafe at 3:30 p.m. the day of the event. rodeoCowgirls from throughout the area expected to travel to Chet and Billie Franks’ ranch near Grenola on Saturday, Sept. 12, to compete in the Women’s Ranch Rodeo Association’s 11th event of the 2009 season.

WRRA features women-only teams competing in a series of ranch rodeos throughout the summer culminating in a national finals to be held in Lyons, Kan., in October. WRRA rodeos are team events with four contestants on each team. Read more

The Howard Chamber of Commerce will host a “meet and greet” for Jetta Osburn, the city’s new police chief from 6-7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 15, at the First National Bank, 101 S. Wabash.

Chief Osburn was sworn in on Aug. 5 and started her full-time duties Aug. 14. She comes to Howard with 8 1/2 years’ experience as a patrol officer in Neodesha. She is currently enrolled at Missouri Southern State University, Joplin, where she is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice and an associate’s degree in law enforcement.

“My first goal is to meet the citizens of Howard and learn from them what they expect of me,” she said. “With the community’s help, I will work to meet their expectations to the best of my ability.”

All are invited to come and welcome the new chief. Light refreshments will be served.
