Honored during the evening was Glen Nelson, a retired jockey and Preakness Stakes winner who lives on a ranch near Wauneta.

A Wichita truck driver was injured when the semi-truck he was driving went off the side of K-99 highway one mile south of Howard on Monday morning, Aug. 24.prairietruckwreck1

The Kansas Highway Patrol says Larry A. Schuessler, 52, of Wichita, was southbound in 2003 Peterbuilt truck, which was carrying a load of paper products, when it dropped a tire off the roadway, pulling the truck into a ditch. The truck rested on its side.

Schuessler was taken to the Greenwood County Hospital in Eureka for medical treatment.

K-99 highway was narrowed to one lane for most of Monday as crews removed the cargo from the semi and placed the truck upright.

Sedan Lions Club will be sponsoring an AARP 8-hour defensive classroom refresher course for all licensed younger and elderly drivers.

The date set is Tuesday, Sept. 22, at the Sedan Senior Center building at 124 E. Main in Sedan, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The State of Kansas allows discounts on insurance premiums for all drivers who complete the 8-hour course. Discounts are different in all insurance companies and you may be eligible to receive a discount on your insurance premium.  You will need to consult your insurance agent for further details. You will not have to take a test. Registration fee for AARP members is $12, non-members $14.

A one-vehicle accident on Highway 160, two miles east of Longton, claimed the life of a Longton teenager early Sunday.

The Kansas Highway Patrol reports that Steven P. Wehling II, age 19, of Longton, died as the result of injuries sustained in the accident.

Wehling was driving west on Highway 160 when he apparently lost control on a curve, went into the north ditch and struck a tree.

It was several hours later before the wreckage was found. Investigators said the wreck happened sometime between 2:30 and 9:30 a.m. Sunday.

Steven Wehling is the son of Karin Coatney and the step-son of Kent Coatney, who reside in Longton.

The second annual “Brody’s Beach Blast” was held at the Howard City Pool last Saturday.  The day of fun was held in memory of 8-year-old Brody Hurt who died in November 2008 of neuroblastoma.  His parents, Shawn and Carey Hurt and sister, Kylie live in Severy. Events included a coed sand volleyball tournament, 3-on-3 basketball, a water carnival and a homerun derby. Permission is being sought by the West Elk USD 282 Board of Education to hold an election later this year to finance construction of a new districtwide elementary school.

The second annual “Brody’s Beach Blast” will be held this Saturday, Aug. 8 at the Howard City Pool.  Events will include a coed sand volleyball tournament, 3-on-3 basketball, a water carnival, and a homerun derby.

The coed sand volleyball tournament will begin at 9 a.m.  The entry fee is $40 per team.  Contact Liz Hendricks at 620-330-2438 for more information.

A 3-on-3 basketball game will begin at 9 a.m. with an entry fee of $30 per team.  Call Heath Pope at 620-583-3274.

The water carnival will be held from 1-3 p.m.  Tickets will be 25¢.  The water carnival includes a water cake walk, pedal boat rides, water balloon toss, fishing, duck pond, ring toss, an inflatable water slide, concessions, and a marble tunnel race.  Call the Howard City Pool at 620-374-2827.

A home run derby will be held south of the pool at 1:30 p.m., with an entry fee of $3.  This will be for ages 5-12, with divisions among those ages.  Call David Whetsone at 620-374-2296 for more information.

A swim meet will also be held at 9 a.m. with Howard hosting Fredonia.

Concessions will be provided by the Elk Konnected Youth Development Action Team with all proceeds going to the group for future activities.
