The Longton Elk County Free Fair is fast approaching as it will be held this weekend, July 31 and Aug. 1.
Booth spaces inside the fair barn are still available. Booths can be set up Thursday, July 30 from 5 to 9 p.m.
Craft booth spaces in the cattle building are available for $20 by contacting Steve Fielder at 642-6341.
Races will begin at 2 p.m. on Friday, July 31. The first race of the fair each year is the big turtle race. Kids 12 and under can enter a turtle into this slow-paced fun event. Grandparents, parents, kids, neighbors and friends, catch those turtles now, whenever you see one, and give them to a kid! They will thank you.
Following the turtle race will be races and games of all kinds for both the young and old. These races will be held on both July 31 and Aug. 1 at 2 p.m. Practice, practice, practice!
There will be stick horse, tricycle, bicycle, 3-legged, sack, foot races, and egg and water balloon tosses. Come to the ball diamond and support your favorite contestant as they run their hearts out.
The fair parade will be held Saturday, Aug. 1 at 10:30 a.m. The parade forms at the south end of Kansas Avenue and proceeds through town.
Entrants will need to sign in and get a number at the registration table in the City Park at the corner of Kansas Avenue and 6th Street beginning at 10 a.m. The numbers are necessary for judging and need to be returned after the parade.
All businesses, churches, clubs, organizations, school class reunions, and even families are encouraged to support the fair by taking part in the parade. Kids need to put on a costume, decorate their tricycles, bicycles, wagons or whatever and be in the parade.
Everything or everyone needs to be decorated in order to be judged for prize money. Entries from neighboring communities are welcome.

The Elk County Free Fair Ranch Rodeo is sure to please city slickers and country folk alike. Eight four-man teams will compete at simulated ranching chores, including double-mugging (also known as stray-gathering), branding (but without a hot iron), doctoring (without actual medicine), and sorting.
Several hometown and area cowboys will be competing in the Ranch Rodeo on Saturday, Aug. 1, starting at 8 p.m. at the fairgrounds arena in Longton. Admission will be just $4 at the gate, with children under 12 admitted free. Bleacher seating will be available, or bring your own lawn chair.
The Ranch Rodeo will make you feel like you’re in the pasture, but you won’t have to watch your step! For more information, contact Shari Kaminska at 620-642-6303.
