Several area schools will send delegates to the state track and field meet at Wichita this Friday and Saturday.
CENTRAL-BURDEN
Central-Burden High School will be sending a delegation to the class 2A state track and field meet at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
The Raider thinclads advanced to the state meet after finishing among the top four in each event at a class 2A regional meet in Moundridge last Friday. At each regional meet, the top four finishers in each event advance to the state track and field meet.
Among the Central-Burden state qualifiers is senior Ashley Wham, who will make an appearance in two events at the state meet. Wham was a regional bronze medalist in the discus (104 feet, 1 inches) and settled for fourth place in the javelin event with a throw of 109 feet, 1 inch.
Misty Teague will represent Central-Burden in the women’s 400 meter sprint. Teauge, a senior, who fourth place at the regional meet with a time of 1 minute, 3.08 seconds.
Briana Moore, a freshman, will make her debut on the state stage in the pole event. The varsity rookie won fourth place in that regional event with a mark of 7 feet, 0 inches.
In the men’s events, senior Preston Doll will finish his career in a Raider uniform by competing two events at the state meet. Doll claimed the regional championship in the discus event with a throw of 144 feet, 11 inches. He also won third place in the shot put with a throw of 48 feet, 1/2 inch.
Stetson Deets, a sophmore, will also compete at the state meet. Deets won a bronze medal in the regional pole valut event with a height of 11 feet, 0 inches.
CEDAR VALE HIGH SCHOOL -
Cedar Vale High School will be sending one of its students to the class 1A state meet this Friday and Saturday in Wichita’s Cessna Stadium.
The state qualifier is Macy Warburton, a junior who qualified in two state tournament events.
At a class 1A regional meet last Friday in Madison, Warburton finished in fourth place in the discus throw (97 feet, 4 inches) and in the shot put with a mark of 31 feet, 7 inches.
At each regional meet, the top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet.
WEST ELK HIGH SCHOOL -
The West Elk High School men’s track team will try to defend its class 2A state crown when members compete at the class 2A state meet at Wichita’s Cessna Stadium on Friday and Saturday.
The Patriot team, winners of the 2008 state title, will see senior Sonny Lee vie to repeat as a triple state champion in the 200 meter and 400 meter runs as well as the high jump. Lee won first place in each of those events at the class 2A regional meet at Moundridge last Friday.
Lee set the regional mark in the 200 meter run at 22.27 seconds, which is the best time from any class 2A sprinter this year. Lee also finished last week’s regional meet with the top time in the 400 meter run (29.73 seconds) and also jumped a height of 6 feet, 2 inches in the high jump event.
Lee also is a member of the men’s 4×100 meter relay team that also qualified for this weekend’s state meet. The Patriot relay team also includes James Lear, Scotty Leppleman and C.J. Madison. The team finished the regional meet in fourth place with a time of 45.57 seconds.
Among the state qualifiers from the West Elk women’s team is Sydney Hines, who won second place in the 100 meter hurdles at last week’s regional meet. Hines cleared the finish line in 17.08 seconds.
Amber Jones will get a shot at a state medal when she competes in the long jump event. The West Elk product claimed third place in the regional long jump event with a mark of 15 feet, 11 inches.
Jones and Hines also will be competing on the women’s 4×100 meter relay team that also qualified for the state meet. Joining team members Kate Kill and Sara Law, the relay team qualified for the state stage after finishing in second place at the regional meet with a time of 53.30 seconds.
The 4×400 meter relay team also qualified for the state meet after claiming a silver medal at the regional event. The team members are Sydney Hines, Kate Kill, Sara Law and Shilo Malone. The 4×400 meter relay team’s regional time was 4 minutes, 27.69 seconds.
At each regional meet, the top four finishers in each event advance to the state meet.
