Cedar Vale/Dexter softball team qualifies for state tournament

The Cedar Vale/Dexter Spartans will compete in the class 2A-1A state softball tournament next Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, in Emporia, Kan.

The Spartans qualified for the state tournament after upsetting the Sedan Blue Devils, 3-2, in the class 2A-1A regional finale on Tuesday.

Cedar Vale/Dexter entered the regional tournament with a three seed and an 8-10 record. However, the Spartans were able to defeat West Elk, 16-4, in the semi-final round and send the Blue Devils packing home in the championship game.

Now posting an 11-12 record, Cedar Vale/Dexter will be the eighth seed in the state tournament.  The Spartans will face the dubious task of facing top-seed the Humboldt Cubs, the number one seed with a 20-1 record.  The game will be played at 5 p.m., Friday, May 29, at the Trusler Sports Complex in Emporia.

A win over Humboldt would put the Spartans in a semi-final game at 10 a.m., Saturday against the winner of Oxford/Salina-Sacred Heart. However, a loss to Humboldt would end the Spartans’ season.

The state tournament consolation game will be played at noon while the championship game will begin at 1 p.m.
