INDEPENDENCE — Independence Community College trustees are expected to meet at 6 p.m., Monday, Aug. 23, to interview six ICC patrons who are seeking appointment to a vacant trustee position.

The vacant trustee seat was held by trustee Tim Emert of Independence before his resignation in June. Emert, an Independence attorney and former state senator, has been appointed to serve on the Kansas Board of Regents.

The six persons who have expressed interest in the position are Hoite Caston, David Wallis, Jedidah Newkirk, Phillip Chappuie, Tom Tyler and Dale Roberts.

Pirate Cove Academy closed by ICC trustees in budget-cutting move

INDEPENDENCE — The director of the Inge Center for the Arts at Independence Community College cried foul Tuesday concerning a proposed 53 percent cut in the center’s budget for 2009-10.

Peter Ellenstein, center director, said the proposed 53 percent cut in the center’s budget ($321,683 in the 2008-09 budget to $150,000 in the college’s proposed 2009-10 budget) was far different than what he was anticipating. In telling the trustees about a budget preparation meeting with ICC finance director Jan Fischer in May, Ellenstein said he was led to believe that the center’s budget would be reduced to about $310,000, which would only be about a 3 or 4 percent cut.

An investigation into a rape incident at the Hillcrest Inn in Independence on Thursday night, April 23, led to the arrest of a 31-year-old Independence man not only in that sexual assault but also on various drug charges.

Sheriff Robert Dierks said a deputy was notified by Mercy Hospital staff late Thursday about a 20-year-old Independence Community College female student who claimed she was raped at the Hillcrest Inn, 3146 N. Penn. The student named Roy Kimball Miller, a Hillcrest Inn resident, as the person who committed the assault.

The student claimed Miller provided her with alcoholic beverages and had give her some type of a prescription pill.
