CANEY — The Caney Valley High School men’s locker room Monday night didn’t have a single dry eye after the Caney Valley Bullpups earned a 66-54 victory over Neodesha in the class 3A sub-state tournament opener.

Those teary eyes weren’t fueled by a tournament victory but by complete sadness for the team coach, Criss Davis, who lost his mentor, father and friend, Les Davis, the previous day.

Criss Davis was not preparing to coach Monday’s game, instead focusing his time on making funeral preparations and dealing with the grief that had befallen his family in such a sad way. The elder Davis was afflicted with a stroke during his grandson’s wedding ceremony in Copan, Okla., on Saturday afternoon. Les Davis died the next day in a Tulsa hospital.

WASHINGTON, D.C. — Whether it’s the soda pop you drink, the pizza you eat, or the antacids you ingest to calm the effects of both, it’s a guarantee that each of those actions will have been approved or regulated to some degree by the Food and Drug Administration.

And, it’s Beth Martino’s job to tell you if your cola is unsafe to guzzle, your pizza is unfit for consumption, or your antacids are concocted from unsafe sources.

On Monday, Martino, a 1998 graduate of Caney Valley High School, assumed the position of FDA’s associate commissioner for external affairs — a job where she oversees and manages the flow of information from the administration to the rest of the nation.

CANEY — Calamity and hilarity will reign when the Caney Valley High School Playmakers present “Fully Committed” to the public for two performances: Friday and Saturday, April 24 and 25. The performances start at 7 p.m., in the CVHS Auditorium. Admission is $4 per person.A day in the life of restaurant reservation taker Sam Peliczowski, played by Caney Valley High School senior Dalton Powell, shows a great deal of frustration.

The play, written by Becky Mode, centers on the calamity and chaos surrounding out-of-work actor-turned-restaurant reservation taker Sam Peliczowski, who is played by CVHS senior Dalton Powell. As the head of reservations at the upscale Le Restaurant du Chef de Cuisine, Sam is responsible for getting the reservations in line for the snooty upper crust.

However, one day in the life of Sam’s frustrated world reveals an abundance of interruptions — dealing with peeved customers, cleaning dirty toilets, contending with odd family members, avoiding sensitive Chef Claude, and arguing with feisty senior citizens.

The fact that such imperfections can be found at a créme-de-la-créme cafe makes Sam’s situation even more bizarre . . . and riotous.

Amber Toth is the CVHS Playmakers advisor.

The public is invited to attend.
