Cherryvale High School varsity men’s basketball team will play in the finals of the class 3A sub-state tournament in Frontenac, Kan., on Saturday night, March 6.

Cherryvale defeated Baxter Springs, 44-40, in the tournament’s semi-final game on Thursday.

The Chargers will play Galena in the sub-state title game.  Galena defeated Caney Valley, 62-41, on Thursday.

The winner of the Cherryvale/Galena game will advance to the class 3A state tournament in Hutchinson, Kan., on March 10-13.

INDEPENDENCE — County commissioners expressed interest in acquiring the Washington School property, which is located north of the Montgomery County Judicial Center.

The school property will be vacated sometime in 2012 due to the construction of a new elementary school near Eisenhower Elementary School in Independence. The USD 446 Board of Education has agreed to seek offers for the sale of that school property.

County commissioners toured the school building two weeks ago to determine its usefulness for county efforts. While some county residents have hinted that the school could be used as a site for a juvenile detention facility, commissioners on Monday were reluctant to put that idea into blueprints.

On Monday, Martino, a 1998 graduate of Caney Valley High School, assumed the position of FDA’s associate commissioner for external affairs — a job where she oversees and manages the flow of information from the administration to the rest of the nation.
