When Major League baseball’s elite gather next Tuesday night for the annual all-star game, it’ll be a celebration of one of America’s greatest pastimes.

Montgomery County has contributed to that national celebration by giving birth to seven big leaguers.
Just who are they?

Of the seven Montgomery County-born professional baseball players, Rudy May holds the distinction of having the longest career. Born July 18, 1944, in Coffeyville, Rudy May spent 16 years in the big leagues as a pitcher. He started in 1965 with the California Angels and wore the Angels’ jersey through the 1974 season.

CHERRYVALE — The Cherryvale High School baseball team advanced into the semi-final round of the class 3A regional tournament Monday night with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Erie Red Devils.

The Chargers trailed 4-2 in the bottom of the seventh inning before the Cherryvale bats came alive. Cody O’Brien, Jordan Lowden, Nate Madl and Kendall Beye were all credited with four consecutive hits that allowed the Chargers to score three runs to earn the victory — which was the 100th triumph for CHS head coach Andy Beshear.

CANEY — On Tuesday of this week, Caney Valley High School head football coach Criss Davis tried to keep an upbeat mood while putting away helmets, shoulder pads and jerseys.

But, even while thinking back to the Bullpups’ 7-2 record for 2009, which included a share of the Tri-Valley League title, the Caney Valley coach grimmaced when realizing his chore.

The Harlem Globetrotters — perhaps the best-known and most-traveled sports team in the world — has a former Independence Community College basketball player as its main showman.

He’s Nathaniel Lofton — who goes by the nickname “Big Easy” based on his hometown of New Orleans — who wore the jersey of the ICC Pirates for the 2001-02 season. Following his one year on the ICC courts, Lofton played at the University of Arkansas-Little Rock before transferring to Southeastern Louisiana University, where he led the team to an NCAA tournament berth.
