CANEY — Mothers of two former Caney Valley High School cheerleaders Monday pleaded with USD 436 Board of Education to end bullying at local schools and to stop protecting family members who are on the local payroll — an issue, they said, that has fueled the bullying environment.

CANEY — Caney water customers are urged to exercise caution and conservation as intense summer heat lessens the supply of available water.

Mayor Dale McBride alerted city councilors Monday to the water level at the Little Caney River Dam, where, as of Monday afternoon, the water level was even with the dam rim. McBride said the long-term forecast, which calls for continued 100-degree heat each day with little to no chance of precipitation, could push the water level to fall below the dam rim, thereby reducing the amount of available water for consumption.

USD 445 faculty and support staff will receive bigger paychecks soon, due to salary hikes granted by the USD 445 Board of Education on Monday.

Monday’s meeting was the final one for the fiscal 2010-11 budget year, which ends on June 30. The board held the meeting to approve final expenditures and transfers to close out the budget year.

Jim Blaes, Cherryvale High School head men’s basketball and head track coach, was rehired to those positions on a pair of 5-2 votes by the USD 447 Board of Education Tuesday night.

At a special school board meeting Tuesday, school board members conferred in executive session, which is closed to the press and public, for two and a half hours before returning to open session and voting to rehire Blaes to those two coaching positions for the 2011-12 school year.
