INDEPENDENCE — Discussions on possible upgrades of 10th Street Road between Dearing and Independence began on Wednesday with the initial meeting of a committee that was developed to examine 10th Street Road issues.

Jim Wright, assistant public works director, said the committee was formed as a result of a $50,000 grant that Montgomery County received through the Kansas Department of Transportation to evaluate possible 10th Street Road upgrades. Committee members represented the Montgomery County Public Works Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department and the regional office of the Kansas Department of Transportation.

CANEY — A barrage of telephone calls to the Caney Police Department dispatcher immediately after the airing of tornado sirens on the evening of May 24 has prompted city officials to educate the public about the intent of the sirens.

City councilors on Monday learned that the Caney Police Department received more than 50 telephone calls from concerned residents when tornado sirens were sounded on May 24 — which was two days after a massive tornado ripped through Joplin, Mo. While a majority of residents responded to the sirens by taking shelter in their own homes or at one of three designated shelter locations, other residents called the dispatcher via 911 to ask why the sirens were sounded.

CHERRYVALE — Colorful banners designating Cherryvale as the gateway to Big Hill Lake and home to the Cherryvale Chargers will soon adorn Main Street.cvalebannercmyk

City councilors on Monday approved the purchase of 47 banners that will be placed on 47 light poles on Main Street, from Liberty to Montgomery streets. The banner chosen by an online poll of city residents includes a picture of Big Hill Lake framed in a field of Charger blue. “CHERRYVALE” is printed in bold red letters while “Gateway to Big Hill Lake” and “Home of the Chargers” is printed in reverse type. The Charger mascot also will be included on the banners.
