CHERRYVALE — Cherryvale’s Third Annual Clean-Up Day is set for Friday, April 29 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m.

USD 447 students in Cherryvale will be released to help local volunteers for several hours of cleaning, painting and washing in the Cherryvale community. The event is sponsored by the Cherryvale Chamber of Commerce and is held prior to the Cherry Blossom Festival as a way to beautify the town.

COFFEYVILLE — Commissioner Pam Jones assumed the title of Coffeyville mayor, Don Edwards joined commissioners Richard Gonzales and David George in taking the oath of office, and commissioners accepted the resignation of commissioner Jim Taylor, Sr., in the first meeting of a new city commission Tuesday.

Jones was named mayor for a one-year term upon unanimous vote of the commission.

CANEY — By a 4-3 margin, USD 436 Board of Education members on Monday voted to drop their current nepotism policy, returning instead to a less restrictive one first adopted in 1990.

Board members Jack Kopfman, Mark Artherton, Suellen Holtzman and David Deal voted to drop a policy approved by the board in 2008 which prohibits the employment of specific family members within the school district. Darlene Sanders, Debbie Morrison and Bobby Hawthorne voted against removing the current policy.

“I have not been given a good reason for making this change,” Sanders said. “I believe board members should be above reproach as we serve on this board. We should not be here for financial gain.”
