The City of Cherryvale received a significant piece of history on Friday, March 25. A piece of steel from one of the twin towers of the World Trade Center, brought down by the terrorist attacks on Sept. 11, 2001, has now arrived in Cherryvale.

Efforts to obtain the piece from the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey began in September 2009. Firefighter Aaron Cook worked through a web of logistic problems concerning regulations and Port Authority requirements that required numerous hours of correspondence over the past year. A local anonymous citizen recently made a donation to cover transportation costs and fire department volunteers traveled to New York City to retrieve the piece this week.

Three Montgomery County residents and two Kansas City, Mo., residents were arrested last Friday in a culmination of a drug investigation that spanned several months.
Arrested at the Dwayne Haberly residence north of Sycamore were Jason Haberly, age 30, of rural Sycamore; Kelsey D. Harshman, age 18, of Kansas City, Mo.; and Cortney A. Praylor, age 21, also of Kansas City, Mo.

ELK CITY — A drive-by shooting at an Elk City residence on March 18 has led to the arrest of two 18-year-olds and a juvenile male.

Sheriff Robert Dierks said a drive-by shooting was reported in the 200 block of Lincoln Street in Elk City at about 11:10 p.m., March 18. The home was occupied at the time. No injuries were reported, but a window was shattered from one of the bullets.

Independence resident Liz Moore is using an unconventional method to tell an unconventional story from her life.

Moore is the author of “Making It Home: My Year As A Middle-Aged Runaway,” which chronicles her time traveling the nation’s highways and backroads and assuming short-term jobs in the far corners of the country.

The story has been released in electronic-format only, also known as an eBook, and available at online vendors such as Amazon.com. Although she has a goal of seeing the book published in print, the eBook format has proven to be an easy way for authors like Moore to get their stories into the eBook-only market in quick fashion.

COFFEYVILLE — A new Coffeyville Community College multi-purpose building will be built next to the Dick foster Football Complex at LeClere Park.

Without comment, CCC trustees on Monday unanimously approved the request to build the 120’ x 80’ square foot facility, which will be used as a site for indoor baseball, softball and track practices during inclement weather. The facility also has the potential of being a gathering or meeting site for large functions involving CCC organizations and campus groups.

Abortions administered to Montgomery County women has declined by 40 percent from 2009 to 2010 while abortions given to Kansas women in that same timeframe has dropped by 12.3 percent, according to statistics released Tuesday by the Kansas Department of Health of Environment.

Voters throughout Montgomery County will go to the polls next Tuesday, April 5 for a general election for city council, school board and community college trustee positions.

All polling locations will be open at 7 a.m., and close at 7 p.m.
