Board members decry failure to abide by nepotism, bullying policies

CANEY — USD 436 Board of Education members required three separate votes to reach a majority agreement whether to extend a job contract to Superintendent Danny Fulton.

Monday’s meeting included the discussion of contract extensions for all school board administrators.

School principals Bill Ellis, Ron Oyler and Sherman Oyler were granted two-year contract extensions through June 30, 2013, on a 5-1 vote. Board member Robert Hawthorne cast the lone dissenting vote.

The school board voted three different times on whether to extend a contract to Superintendent Danny Fulton. After a one-year contract extension was rejected by the board on a 2-4 vote, the board split 3-3 to grant a two-year contract extension.

The board then revisited the initial one-year contract proposal and agreed to allow the contract on a 6-0 vote. Fulton’s contract will expire on June 30, 2012.

Board members Robert Hawthorne and Darlene Sanders also took issue with the school district’s nepotism and bullying policies, saying that the school board and superintendent failed to abide by those two policies.

The nepotism bullying prohibits board members from providing employment to family members.

The bullying policy encourages a no-tolerance approach toward dealing with students involved in bullying situations.
