A rural Coffeyville man is in custody following the discovery of a clandestine methamphetamine lab at his home east of Coffeyville late Monday afternoon.
Sheriff Robert Dierks said the home of William Jack Marlin, 57, of 1509 CR 1600 was approached by deputies who were conducting a follow-up investigation into stolen property. Investigators made contact with Marlin at the home and asked to speak with him about the whereabouts of the missing property. As they were speaking with him, they noticed a chemical odor associated with the manufacture of methamphetamine, Dierks said.
Dierks stated that as officers were speaking with Marlin, he attempted to run from the house with evidence of methamphetamine manufacturing. However, he was taken into custody as he attempted to flee from the house. A search warrant was granted for the residence and during the execution of this search warrant, officers located items used to manufacture methamphetamine as well as other drug paraphernalia and methamphetamine.
Dierks indicated that the recommended charges for William Jack Marlin will be attempted manufacture of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine and felony possession of drug paraphernalia. Marlin is currently in the Montgomery County Department of Corrections and Dierks stated that additional charges may be forthcoming as the investigation continues.
Sheriff Dierks stated that the investigation was a good indication to the public of the prevalence of clandestine methamphetamine labs and the danger they present.
“In this case, one of my officers came very close to having these dangerous chemicals thrown on him in the suspect’s attempt to get rid of evidence,” said Dierks. “These labs represent a very real danger and we are seeing it more and more.”
