Caney city workers, administrator get 3% pay hike

Caney city councilors on Monday voted 5-1 to grant city administrator Don Whitman a one-year contract extension as well as 3 percent salary increase.

City councilor Jason Moore voted against the measure while councilors Dan Johnston, Josh Eaton, Joe Taylor, April Coots and Alyssa Whitman voted in favor. Councilors Erin Munday and Roger Hawthorne were absent from Monday’s meeting.

Pursuant to Whitman’s contract with the City of Caney, councilors determine each February whether to grant Whitman a one-year extension to his three-year contract. Councilors on Monday made the decision after conferring with Whitman in an executive session, which is closed to the press and public.

Whitman’s 3 percent pay increase is the same pay hike also given to city employees at Monday’s meeting. Councilors noted that city employees, including Whitman, have not received a salary increase since 2008

The 3 percent pay hike Whitman and all other city employees will be reflected in the next pay period, which begins on Feb. 27.

An ordinance printed on page B9 of this week’s Montgomery County Chronicle provides details of the new salaries for city employees.
