City commissioners got an earful from local landlords Tuesday night during a work session to discuss possible implementation of rental housing standards.

The proposed housing standards, which were endorsed by the Coffeyville Planning and Zoning Commission, in 2010, were among the key recommendations of a comprehensive plan adopted by commissioners in May 2010.

The proposed rental standards would, among other things, require licensing of landlords who own rental properties within the city limits, inspections of rental properties to determine if they conform to minimum housing standards, and fine landlords whenever housing violations are not addressed.

Inclement weather has forced the postponement of Thursday’s games at the Wilson County Classic, a mid-season basketball tournament in Fredonia.

Thursday’s games will now be played on Friday, Jan. 21, along with the regularly-scheduled games for Friday.

Here are the games involving area teams to be played in the women’s bracket on Friday:

• Cherryvale vs. Neodesha, 3 p.m., Old Gym.

• Caney Valley vs. Girard, 6:45 p.m., New Gym.

Games involving the men’s bracket on Friday include:

• Caney Valley vs. Erie, 5 p.m., New Gym

• Cherryvale vs. Girard, 8:15 p.m., Old Gym.

Newcomer to Lincoln-Central Elementary School designs
greeting cards to build orphanages, foster hope in Haiti, Africa

CHERRYVALE — One year after the country of Haiti was largely pulverized by a massive earthquake, a Cherryvale grade school student is raising money to build orphanages and community homes in that impoverished  island nation.

However, the generous efforts of Isabelle Redford, a third grade student at Cherryvale’s Lincoln-Central Elementary School, began long before that jarring earthquake in January 2010.

It started several years ago when Redford, then living in Parsons, heard a story from her mother, Kelly Redford, about two orphaned infants in Haiti — babies who were left without parents when the mother died during childbirth. Upon learning that Haiti has a high number of orphan children, the young Redford asked what she could do to help.
