TYRO — A new face at the Tyro Christian Church has everybody wondering, “Could this possibly be the young minister who someday will replace David Bycroft?”

That comment brings a laugh from Nathan Boldt, 28, who is spending one year as an associate minister and intern at the church which has grown to become one of the largest churches in the area.

“I really don’t know about that,” Boldt says. “Right now, I’m just interested in learning everything I can from Dave Bycroft and other congregational leaders. They have a track record that everybody knows about — and I’m here to learn and serve.”

An Angel Tree will be erected at Community National Bank & Trust in Cherryvale beginning on Friday, Dec. 10, with the names and information concerning local children in need.

The children on the Angel Tree will need to be “adopted” by local families for the Christmas season. Information on when the gifts need to be returned for the distribution to the local children will be included on the Angel Tree.

CANEY — In its final invitational tournament of the 2010 season on Saturday, Caney Valley High Schoold debaters earned their seventh consecutive first-place trophy at a tournament hosted by Pittsburg High School.

Caney Valley has competed in eight invitational tournaments since September. The local debaters did not win a first-place trophy at their season-opener in September but rattled off seven consecutive sweepstakes trophies.

“It’s been a successful season,” said Amber Toth, Caney Valley head coach.

CANEY — A number of children and teenagers are still in need of adoption in the Angel Tree project, sponsored by ACTS Thrift Shop with the assistance of three local banks.

Trees are displayed at Arvest  Bank, Community National Bank and Bank of America in Caney with “angels” still on the tree who need adopted for Christmas gift giving.

CHERRYVALE — Cherryvale’s water and sewer customers will see a slight nudge in their water-sewer bills later this month, due to rate hikes unanimously approved by city councilors on Monday.

Councilors agreed to a recommendation from city administrator Greg McDanel to raise water rates 2 percent  and to hike sewer rates by 3 percent for 2011. The new rates will be reflected in the water bills that will be mailed to customers at the end of December.
