COFFEYVILLE — The Coffeyville Police Department is investigating twin deaths of a Coffeyville father and son on Monday.

Police investigated the sound of a gunshot in the 600 block of West First around 6 a.m., Monday. Upon arrival at the home at 605 W. First, police found the body of Carl Hartzell, age 93, who died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Cherryvale Chamber of Commerce is hosting a celebration of duty for the 10 soldiers from the Cherryvale group that have served in Afghanistan for the past year. They returned home on Dec. 23 just in time for the holidays with their families.

The chamber will be having a chili supper in honor of them at New Life Praise and Worship, 308 N. Liberty, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m., Thursday, Dec. 30. The public is invited to attend, with the special guests of the soldiers and their families.

Special Cherryvale Packages will be given to each soldier for their service to not only our country, but to our community. If you have anything for the packets, or would simply like to donate towards them, please contact Tina at (620) 891-0072.

COFFEYVILLE — The Coffeyville Police Department, with assistance from the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department, on Monday, Dec. 20, conducted a warrant “round-up” of over 20 outstanding arrest warrants for narcotics violations and other charges.

Commander Mike Brown said a majority of the narcotics warrants were the results of ongoing investigations into narcotics trafficking by the Coffeyville Police Department, Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office and the Kansas Bureau of Investigation.

The lastest non-fiction book that chronicles a key event of World War II is written by a Montgomery County native.

Author, aviator and Coffeyville native Robert Gandt, now living in Daytona Beach, Fla., wrote “The Twilight Warriors,” which chronicles the Allied invasion of Okinawa, the largest naval operation in history. The book was published and released by Random House last month and is available through a variety of online sources and bookstores.

City commissioners received an earful Monday night from local landlords who are concerned about a proposed rental standard law.

Commissioners are considering a new ordinance that, if implemented, would require a $25 permit for each landlord who owns properties in Coffeyville as well as inspection of rental properties. The ordinance also will allow tenants to notify city officials of problems with their rental properties that, if left unaddressed by the landlord, could result in a $500 fine to the landlord.

The proposed ordinance did not sit well with as many as five local landlords who voiced their concerns Monday.

Area residents interested in seeking election to city councils, school boards or community college boards of trustees will have until noon Tuesday, Jan. 25 to file for election.

The 2011 spring election cycle will included a primary election (if necessary) on Tuesday, March 1 and a general election on Tuesday, April 5.

Four area residents have thrown their hat into the ring for a Kansas House of Representative seat that will soon be vacated by State Rep. Jeff King, R-Independence.

King was recently selected to replace State Sen. Derek Schmidt, R-Independence. Schmidt was elected in November to a four-year term as Kansas Attorney General.
