Two 18-year-old men were killed in a two-vehicle collision at the U.S. 169-160 highway junction south of Cherryvale on Monday afternoon, Nov. 1.
The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 2006 Chevy pickup driven by Tyler Keith Martin, age 18, of Georgetown, Texas, pulled out from the stop sign on U.S. 160 and did not provide sufficient clearance to cross the highway before it was struck by a 1999 Peterbilt semi-tractor trailer driven by Stephon Ardway Carney, age 48, of Vinita, Okla.
Martin was pronounced dead at the scene while a passenger, Sammy Lazhir, age 18, of Brooklyn, N.Y., died at Mercy Hospital in Independence of injuries sustained in the collision.
Carney was not injured.
The accident occurred at 3:20 p.m., and the Kansas Highway Patrol remained on the scene until after 8:30 p.m., to recreate the collision site, through various cameras, at the scene, as part of the patrol’s investigation.
The Kansas Highway Patrol said all drivers and passengers in the collision were wearing their seat belts.
Lazhir and Martin were students at Neosho County Community College in Chanute where they were on the college’s cross country team.
Monday’s double fatality wreck marked the third vehicular deaths that have taken place at the U.S. 169-160 highway junction in 2010.
