How to address the maintenance of city streets with revenue from the city sales tax for street improvements was the subject of debate among Coffeyville city commissioners Tuesday.

Chuck Shively, director of public works, recommended that the City of Coffeyville pursue a street improvement program based on a 70-30 formula, with 70 percent of the sales tax proceeds to be used for preventative maintenance and 30 percent for repair and/or replacement of existing road surfaces.

Bitten by misfortune that left her homeless, penniless and full of mental anguish as little as six month ago, Dina Jolly has become a changed woman.

No longer penniless, homeless and full of mental anguish, Jolly has reformed her life with the help of counselors at Four County Mental Health Center.

She has a job at the Independence McDonald’s restaurant. She has her own place of residence. She pays her bills on time, looks forward to interacting with friends and family, and proudly sports a smile — something that had been missing from part of her life.

CHERRYVALE — An enrollment milestone has been reached in USD 447 Cherryvale-Thayer: a total headcount of more than 1,000 students for the 2010-11 school year.

And, the number of students continue to grow.

Superintendent Randy Wagoner informed USD 447 Board of Education members Monday about the recent enrollment count day, which was held on Sept. 20. On that day, enrollment numbers are made official for state financial aid and school classification purposes.

Wagoner said the total number of students attending all USD 447 schools and programs — including the Cherryvale at-risk preschool for 4-year-old children and the Cherryvale Diploma Center — brought the headcount to slightly more than 1,000. That’s the largest enrollment ever attained in USD 447 history, Wagoner said.

INDEPENDENCE — Sheila Bair, chair of the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation and among the most influential persons involved in the global economy, will return to her hometown of Independence in late October for the Neewollah celebration.

Generalissimo Fred Meier announced on Saturday that Bair has accepted an invitation to serve as Honorary Grand Parade Marshall for the Neewollah Grand Parade on Saturday, Oct. 30.

Referencing the words of another famous Independence native – Pulitzer-prize winning playwright William Inge – Meier noted the pivotal role Bair has played in recent years as head of the FDIC.

“Sheila is definitely proof that Inge was right when he said that ‘big people come out of small towns,’” Meier said.  “Her leadership during this country’s recent financial crises is a testament to her sound Independence roots.”

In addition to participating in Saturday’s Neewollah Grand Parade, Bair will address several local civic groups during a joint luncheon meeting on Friday, Oct. 29.  She is also scheduled to attend the Queen Neelah breakfast for candidates and their parents on Saturday morning, before the parade.
