CANEY — Kevin McIntosh of Caney was appointed to the at-large position of the Caney Valley Recreation Commission during the commission’s monthly meeting on Wednesday, Oct. 13.
McIntosh earned the nod on a 3-2 vote.
McIntosh’s appointment came as a result of the commission’s decision to rescind a vote made at a special meeting on Sept. 19 in which Rick Pell of Caney was appointed to the at-large post. That position was held by John Harmon of Caney.
That Sept. 19 meeting was the subject of a complaint filed with the Montgomery County Attorney by the Montgomery County Chronicle. The Chronicle had concerns about the way the Sept. 19 meeting was held and how parties involved with the at-large position selection were notified of the meeting. Montgomery County Attorney Larry Markle asked the commission to apply a “civil remedy” to the situation by rescinding the Sept. 19 decision and voting again on the at-large post selection.
At the Oct. 13 meeting, commissioners voted 3-1 to rescind the action from the Sept. 19 meeting, which allowed John Harmon to return to his seat on the commission based on direction of the commission’s legal counsel, John Horst of Caney.
Harmon indicated he was withdrawing his name as an applicant for the at-large position, which left Pell and McIntosh as the only candidates. McIntosh earned a majority of the commission’s approval after commission members asked questions to McIntosh and Pell.
Also at the Oct. 13 meeting, the commission held discussion on the recreation commission’s involvement and commitment to a youth/recreational facility now under construction by Robert and Betty Moore. The facility is being constructed at First and Ridgeway streets.
Commission members discussed the facility’s plans and asked if the building’s construction would benefit the recreation commission and its needs to operate the facility when completed. Moore assured the board that financial difficulties would not be an issue in running the center in the future. The board still has several concerns about its long-term obligation to operating the facility and wants to do its own research upon receiving more firm plans from Moore concerning the building’s design.
Recreation director Brett Anderson discussed the youth volleyball program which was just completed. There was also discussion concerning the youth football program and the many issues dealt with this season. Anderson mentioned he planned to strongly recommend that the Caney Valley Youth Football League have a season-end meeting to discuss many possible changes for the league in 2011. Anderson also mentioned that many individuals have asked him to serve as commissioner of the football league and the board reassured him that he did not need to take on any more responsibility. Anderson indicated he was more than agreeable with this recommendation.
The cheerleading program was discussed and decided not to offer the new pompoms to the participants but would offer the old ones at $2.00 a piece until gone.
The 2010-11 youth basketball program was discussed. The fee for the Tri-Valley League will be $25.00 per participant, which is higher than last year to allow for more compensation for referees. Free basketball clinics will be held in late November with games starting in January.
The commission agreed to provide $200 toward a skating party for the youth cheerleaders and youth football players.
The commission also asked Anderson to have the Caney Valley Recreation Commission develop a Facebook fan page and to have minutes of the meeting provided to the Montgomery County Chronicle.
