cvalezortzrgb CHERRYVALE — A retired Cherryvale school teacher has teamed up with an artistic sister to create a series of children’s books centering on the adventures of a puppet.

Joyce Long of Cherryvale and her sister Margie Trotter of Edmond, Okla., collaborated on the new book “The Misadventures of Zortz: The Real Me,” which was released last week by Tanos Books of Coffeyville.

Zortz not only is the green puppet that is the centerpiece of the books, but it also is a real puppet that is taken on the road for various magic shows and other presentations.

“I acquired Zortz at a Christian magicians’ show about three years ago, and that’s when I developed the idea of writing a book that puts the young reader in the life of the puppet,” said Long.

LIBERTY — Sixty-five years after being honorably discharged from the U.S. Army, rural Liberty resident Carl Funk can still proudly wear the uniform that suited him during his days as a paratrooper in the Pacific.

And, he still carries a high regard for the service — and the war — that he says liberated the world from tyranny.

Funk, a retired music teacher, was one of 114 World War II veterans from Kansas who made a trip to the National World War II Memorial in Washington, D.C., on Sept. 28-29 as part of the Central Prairie Honor Flights. The Kansas chapter of the national grassroots movement has now made 11 total trips to the nation’s capital for aging veterans to view the monuments and the newly-established National World War II Memorial on the National Mall in Washington, D.C. The organization hopes to fly at least 3,000 more Kansas World War II veterans in the coming months.
