COFFEYVILLE — A Coffeyville man sustained a gunshot wound in the leg in what appears to be an accidental shooting.

Commander Mike Brown of the Coffeyville Police Department said Ronald J. Brooks, age 29, of 1104 W. 10th was shot in the upper leg on Thursday afternoon after being accidentally shot by an acquaintance while at 207 W. First.

Brooks was transported to Coffeyville Regional Medical Center, where he was treated and released later in the day.

Three Montgomery County sheriff’s deputies were the targets of gunfire by a Nowata County man who barricaded himself in his rural Nowata County home early Friday morning, Sept. 24.

The deputies, whose names were not released, were not injured when they faced several rounds of gunfire by James Michael “Mike” Mehl, age 48, at the Mehl home in rural Nowata County early Friday. The deputies were called to the home to provide secondary assistance to the Nowata County Sheriff’s Department, which was trying to issue an arrest warrant on Mehl.

COFFEYVILLE — Dr. Don Woodburn, who has served as Coffeyville Community College president since August 2004, was relieved of his duties Monday based on a split vote of the CCC trustees.

The decision to suspend came after the board met in executive session, which is closed to the press and public. After the closed-door meeting, trustees Blake Allen, Sheri Melander and Buck Walton voted to suspend Woodburn while trustees Lue Barndollar and Becky Medley voted against the measure.

fkhshomecomingweb COFFEYVILLE — Field Kindley High School will host a variety of activities for Spirit Week, which is set for Sept. 20-24, culminating in Homecoming football and coronation on Friday, Sept. 24.

Spirit Week is sponsored by the FKHS Student Council with Julie Newby as sponsor. Each weekday is specifically designated as a “dress up” day so that the students can show their school spirit.

COLUMBUS — The murder of a Coffeyville woman one year ago remains unsolved. However, an area sheriff says the investigation in the murder of Brittney Sue Fox, age 19, of Coffeyville remains a high priority.

Cherokee County Sheriff David Groves said his department continues to gather tips and seek leads into the murder of Fox, whose body was found one-quarter mile east of the U.S. 166/K-26 highway junction in rural Cherokee County on Sept. 22, 2009.
