MANHATTAN — Kansas 4-H members from across the state gathered recently at Kansas State University to test their knowledge of livestock and livestock related subjects. Contests were conducted for livestock judging, meats judging and livestock skillathon by the KSU animal Science Department and K-State Research and Extension.
Montgomery County Senior 4-H meats judging team, coached by Dick Winkle, placed second in the state and will be participating in the National 4-H Meats Judging Contest on Oct. 26 in connection with the American Royal in Kansas City, Mo. The second place team was lead by Mary Reilly, Happy Hustlers 4-H, who placed first in identification, second in reasons, fourth in placings and second overall. Joseph Johnson, Peppy Progressive 4-H, placed sixth in placings and identification, 11th in reasons and sixth overall. Miranda Gordon, Fawn Creek 4-H, placed eighth in identification and 10th overall. Justin King, Happy Hustlers 4-H, placed seventh in identification and 11 overall.
The Montgomery County Intermediate 4-H Meats Judging Team almost swept their contest in meat identification. First place went to Ty Wood, Happy Hustlers; second to Josie Reilly, Happy Hustlers; third went to Adam Lattin, Happy Hustlers; fifth to Zack Wood, Happy Hustlers; and sixth, Alexa Maulsby, Fawn Creek 4-H. Overall, Reilly won first followed by Lattin in third,Ty Wood in fifth, Maulsby in seventh, and Zach Wood in 10th.
The 4-H Livestock Skillathon contest tests members knowledge of meat cuts, breed identification, livestock equipment identification, placing classes of hay and meat and a written exam. The Montgomery County 4-H team placed sixth. Members were Adam Lattin, Happy Hustlers 4-H; Hayleigh Passauer, Peppy Progressive 4-H; Josie Reilly, Happy Hustlers; and Ty Wood, Happy Hustlers.
Hayleigh Passauer led the group placing fifth overall. Josie Reilly placed 14th; Adam Lattin, 20th; and Ty Wood, 36th.
Sixty-six members competed in the state 4-H contest. The group coordinator was Phil Reilly, Cherryvale. Parents of the 4-H’ers accompanied the trip.
