A former Caney Valley High School teacher awaits sentencing after pleading no contest to having unlawful sexual relations with a student.

Stacy Main, age 30, of Coffeyville taught English classes at Caney Valley High School until her resignation in late July. On Wednesday, she pleaded no contest to having unlawful sexual relations with a 17-year-old male student in 2009. In Kansas, it is against the law for teachers to engage in sexual relations with students.

Main will return to court on Oct. 15 to hear her sentence, which, according to assistant county attorney David Maslen, could be anywhere from five to 13 months in prison or one year probation, depending on Main’s previous criminal history.

Because Main pleaded no contest to unlawful sexual relations with a 17, the county attorney’s office agreed to dismiss one additional count of unlawful sexual relations and two counts of adultery.

Main was represented by her attorney, Curt Schneider of Coffeyville, in a hearing in Montgomery County District Court on Thursday.
