CANEY — A former Caney Valley Jr.-Sr. High School teacher has been formally charged with two counts of having unlawful sexual relations with a male student.

Stacy Main, age 30, will return to Montgomery County District Court in Independence on Aug. 12 for a first formal appearance following the presentation of charges against her on Friday.

Main, who resides in rural Coffeyville, was formally charged with two counts of unlawful sexual relations with a 17-year-old Caney Valley High School student who was age 16 when the sexual relations occurred. According to court records, Main allegedly “unlawfully and feloniously engaged in consensual sodomy and/or lewd fondling and touching with the male student” in 2009 and also engaged in sexual intercourse with the same student on Oct. 15, 2009. The court records did not disclose the name of the student.

State law prohibits teachers from engaging in sexual relations with students.

Both charges are considered a severity level 10 personal felony. If Main is convicted of the two charges, she could face a sentence of five to 13 months in prison on each of the two counts and also be fined $100,000.

Main was arrested last Friday, after which she posted a $5,000 personal bond. According to court records, Main is represented by Coffeyville attorney Curt Schneider.

Main resigned her position as English teacher and color guard director on July 15.
