CANEY — USD 436 schools will be open to out-of-district students for the 2010-11 school year due to a unanimous vote by the USD 436 Board of Education Monday.
School board members agreed with a recommendation from Superintendent Danny Fulton to keep the district’s doors open to out-district students based on availability in the classroom and also on previous academic and classroom behavior.
Board members Mark Artherton, David Deal, Robert Hawthorne, Suellen Holtzman, Debbie Morrison and Darlene Sanders voted to maintain the out-district policy. Board member Jack Kopfman was absent from Monday’s monthly school board meeting.
In other business transacted at Monday’s school board meeting, the school board chose David Deal to serve as board president and Suellen Holtzman as board vice president for the 2010-11 school year. Mark Atherton was nominated to serve as board vice president, but the nomination failed on a 3-3 vote.
Monday’s meeting was the first for the 2010-11 school year. Yearly appointments were made at the meeting, including:
• Board clerk: Laura O’Dell
• Board treasurer: Jeannette Bellmyer
• Board attorney: John Horst
• School district newspaper for publication of legal notices: Montgomery County Chronicle.
• School district depository/bank: Arvest Bank.
• Time, date and location of regular meeting: second Monday of each month at 7 p.m., at the USD 436 Board of Education Office, 700 E. Bullpup Blvd., in Caney.
• School meal prices for 2010-2011: (Lunches) Grade School $1.65; Jr./Sr. High School $1.85; Adult $3.00. (Breakfasts) Grade School $.95; Jr./Sr. High School $1.00; Adult $2.00. (Milk) 40¢ each.
• Mileage rate for reimbursement: 40¢ per mile (a decrease from 47¢ per mile in the 2009-10 school year.
• School board representative to the Caney Valley Recreation Commission: Robert Hawthorne.
• School board representative to the Tri-County Special Education Cooperative: Darlene Sanders.
• School board designate as Governmental Relations Representative: Suellen Holtzman,
• School board designate as Indian Education Representative: Debbie Morrison.
• School district designate as Caney Community Foundation Committee Director: Danny Scott.

In other business transacted at Monday’s school board meeting, the board:
• approved the hiring of Rhonda Inman as junior high assistant girls’ volleyball coach and Jennifer Rigdon as jr. high assistant girls’ basketball coach.
• approved the resignation of Justin Lockwood as district transportation and maintenance director.
• approved the sale of the district-owned house at 205 N. Fawn at a price of $80,000.
• heard a report from Superintendent Danny Fulton about recent research concerning effects of indoor air quality (heating and air conditioning systems) on student performance. The board will discuss this issue at the August board meeting.
• met in executive session for 20 minutes to discuss personnel matters.
