CHERRYVALE — Cherryvale city councilors were given a daunting challenge Tuesday night: come up with ways to reduce costs while also searching for ways to expand the community’s tax base.

That won’t be an easy task for councilors and city administrator Greg McDanel as they prepare the 2011 budget plan in the coming weeks. The budget plan for the upcoming calendar will have to be finished by early August.

INDEPENDENCE — The 89th Annual Montgomery County 4-H Fair will begin next Tuesday, July 13 with the fashion fair to be held in the Independence Civic Center. Judging of clothing and modeling will begin at 8:30 a.m.

Fair events will continue on Tuesday, July 20 with the king and queen coronation as well as the public style revue, which will be held at 7 p.m., in the Independence Memorial Hall.

When Major League baseball’s elite gather next Tuesday night for the annual all-star game, it’ll be a celebration of one of America’s greatest pastimes.

Montgomery County has contributed to that national celebration by giving birth to seven big leaguers.
Just who are they?

Of the seven Montgomery County-born professional baseball players, Rudy May holds the distinction of having the longest career. Born July 18, 1944, in Coffeyville, Rudy May spent 16 years in the big leagues as a pitcher. He started in 1965 with the California Angels and wore the Angels’ jersey through the 1974 season.

CHERRYVALE — Cherryvale’s Logan Park is a busy place this week as the site becomes home to the Cherryvale Youth Fair — the first fair for the summer season.

Kids poured into the park last night (Wednesday) to set up their livestock and indoor exhibits. Events will continue today (Thursday) with the judging of indoor exhibits at 1 p.m., followed by poultry judging at 4 p.m., and rabbit judging at  p.m.

CANEY — A rural Caney woman died in a two-vehicle collision at the U.S. 75/166 highway junction four miles north of Caney on Tuesday morning.

The deceased motorist was Tami (Thornton) Fleming of rural Caney.

The Fleming vehicle, which was northbound on U.S. 75, hydroplaned when it hit a large patch of standing water and collided head on with a southbound trash truck under the U.S. 166 viaduct. The identity of the trash truck was not known. The driver did not sustain injuries in the collision.
