Michael Estes, a letter carrier for the Caney Post Office, received a Certificate of Appreciation from the U.S. Postal Service last Thursday after he was credited with saving the life of a Caney woman.

The story, which was reported in a recent edition of the Montgomery County Chronicle, told of Alpha Ross, 703 N. State St., who fell in her bathtub and remained there over a period of five days.  Estes summoned police and family members because he noticed the hometown newspaper was still in her mailbox. Entry was made to the home and Ross was taken by ambulance for treatment in an area hospital.

COFFEYVILLE — Work is underway to transform a downtown Coffeyville property into the adminstrative and business offices for Windsor Place — a Coffeyville-based nursing facility that also operates several other nursing-related services.

Monte Coffman, Windsor Place executive director, said the former First National Bank property at the corner of Eighth and Walnut streets has been acquired by Windsor Place as have two adjacent properties housing the Coffeyville Area Community Foundation and the Southeast Kanas Area Legal Associates.  All three properties were formerly owned by Bill Kurtis.

Retired USD 445 superintendent Dr. Robert Morton was rehired to his position on Monday — just several weeks after announcing his retirement plans.

USD 445 Board of Education 5-2 to rehire Morton as a retired superintendent for a three-year contract at a salary of $94,000 per year — down from his previous salary of $118,408.
