CANEY — The Caney Valley Antique Power Association’s showgrounds are being made ready for its 17th Annual Pioneer Days on June 4, 5 and 6, at the CVAPA facility 3 1/2 miles north of Caney on Hwy. 75.

On Friday, June 4, registration will be held at 8 a.m., with the Boy Scouts presenting the flag raising followed by the Parade of Power at 12 noon. A bean feed will be held at 5 p.m.

Saturday, June 5, activities will again include registration at 8 a.m. with the flag raising ceremony, the kiddie pedal pull and garden tractor pull at 10 a.m., with the Parade of Power at 11. The garden tractor pull will be for stock block, gas only machines, and at the kiddie pedal pull, helmets are required for the participants. The tractor pull will begin at 1 p.m., using the CVAPA sled and there is a $10 hook fee. This year a new class will be added — farm tractors.

Sunday, June 6, will feature the consignment auction at 1 p.m. Commission rates are 12% on items up to $500; sales over $500 with commission will be 8%. There will be a $10 “no sale” fee. The auction will be conducted by Terry and Jim Brown of Brown Auction Services, Independence.

Working demonstrations will be on the grounds showcasing wheat threshing, rock crushing, hay baling, plowing, wheat binding, broom making, blacksmithing and a quilt show.

A flea market/swap meet and concessions stand will also be on the grounds. The flea market/swap meet is a crowd pleaser and last year over 90 booths offered everything from new shoes, tools, furniture, collectibles and many other items for sale. The concession stand will offer lunch and refreshment needs and is centrally located on the grounds. CVAPA has added new buildings in the past two to three years which helps in hosting this huge annual show, Pioneer Days. Camper hookups and showers are also available. The CVAPA Pioneer Days will showcase Allis tractors and Briggs engines.

A highlight of the Pioneer Days will be a quilt show on Friday, June 4, and Saturday, June 5, only. The show open at 8:30 a.m. on Friday and closes at 3 p.m. on June 5.

Anyone may enter a quilt or other handwork free of charge. Due to limited space, organizers said that they may have to limit entries to one quilt per person. Other items that can be entered include crochet, woven or knitted articles such as afghans and wall hangings made of fiber.

All those visiting the quilt show will be able to vote for their favorite quilt or item, and first, second and third place ribbons will be awarded. Everyone who enters will receive a “thank you” certificate.

Quilts and the other items must be picked up for removal at 3:15 p.m. on June 5.

Marge Carra, Caney, is the quilt show director. She said Linda Mellen will be demonstrating sewing basic quilt blocks for the public to view.

For more information about the quilt show, contact Carra at 620-879-5338. The CVAPA will not be responsible for any damages to items, should they occur.

The public is invited to come to the CVAPA Pioneer Days on June 4, 5 and 6.
