COFFEYVILLE —  bygone era in the history of Coffeyville will be remembered on Friday and Saturday, June 4-5, when former members of the Coffeyville Drum and Bugle Corps gather for a reunion.

Following Saturday’s banquet, former drug and bugle corps members will see if the still have their marching precision when they perform at the Field Kindley High School Gymnasium beginning at about 8 p.m. Instead of carrying brass bugles, they’ll see if they have retained their proper embouchure . . . by playing kazoos.

Carolyn Vannoster is hoping her poetic words will reach deep into a person’s soul . . . and also in the driver’s seat of their vehicle.

The Jefferson woman recently wrote a poem that has quickly gained accolades on the internet as it teaches the perils of using cellular telephones while driving.

The issue of “texting” — sending text messages via cellular phone — while also driving behind the wheel of a vehicle has gained traction in recent years as more state lawmakers have heard about the deadly consequences of both simultaneous actions. In Kansas, Gov. Mark Parkinson last week signed a bill into law that prohibits texting while driving effective immediately.

Vannoster said she became more aware of the issue while watching a recent newscast that aired a segment regarding deaths caused by motorists who text while driving. She said she was horrified by the issue, noting that texting while driving has been proven to have a slower response rate by a motorist than drinking while driving.

COFFEYVILLE — “A rockin’ block party” is how the first-ever Coffeyville Fun Fest celebration is being hailed as the community welcomes its newest festival this week.

The Fun Fest is sponsored by Downtown Coffeyville, Inc., which created the event as a replacement for the now-defunct New Beginnings Festival.

CHERRYVALE — Construction of the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad’s new railyard began Tuesday when the first clumps of dirt were turned at a ceremony attended by dignitaries and dozens of railroad employees.

The new switch yard — where freight cars will be switched on a daily basis — will be built at an area four miles north of Cherryvale. The switch yard will be located easet of U.S. 169 highway and south of U.S. 400 highway between county roads 5800 and 6000. The switch yard will include as many as six miles of switching tracks for the transfer and exchange of as many as 50,000 rail cars per year, said Rick Webb, chief executive officer of Watco, Inc., the parent company of the South Kansas and Oklahoma Railroad.
