CHERRYVALE — Sixth grade students at Cherryvale’s Lincoln-Central Elementary School got a thorough lesson in hand and eye coolyonswebrdination last Friday morning.

However, this lesson did not take place in a school classroom. Nor was it led by a classroom teacher.
Instead, the sixth graders, while attending their annual campout at Big Hill Lake, received a lesson in juggling from school custodian Mike Lyon, an accomplished juggler in his own right.

Lyon’s lesson on Juggling 101 revolved around the tossing and throwing of tennis balls. And, what appeared to be a simple-enough routine of tossing one ball into the area, followed by the introduction of a second thrown ball with the same hand turned increasingly challenging when a third ball was thrown into the mix.

CANEY — Fearing citizen rejection of future tax hikes, Caney city councilors Monday voted to forego a proposal to seek federal government funds for the construction of a new city library.

Councilors were unanimous to not seek $244,000 in grant funds from the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Rural Development for library construction. Part of the financial package proposal was that the City of Caney would borrow $244,000 for the project and repay the loan at 4 1/8  percent interest over 30 years.

Repaying the loan would raise the city’s mill levy, also known as a tax rate, by about 1.5 mills (using current 2010 budget and valuation numbers) over the term of the loan.

Increasing the property tax burden by that level was too much for councilors to swallow.
