BREAKING NEWS: Rare case of rabies confirmed in county

COFFEYVILLE — A rare case of rabies in a cow has been confirmed by Dr. Warren Newby, DVM, Coffeyville.

Newby said a cow was brought to his clinic three weeks ago with nervous symptoms. Newby kept the animal for observation then began noticing other symptoms which he feared might be rabies.

When the animal died a week later, Dr. Newby sent the head to a diagnostic laboratory at the Oklahoma Department of Health in Oklahoma City and the results came back as positive for rabies.

“I’ve only seen one other case of rabies in cattle,” said Newby who has been in practice for over 45 years.

He said the two owners of the cow took inoculations as a precaution against getting the deadly disease.

“I’d say the cow probably contracted rabies by contact with a skunk,” Newby said.

It is his understanding that a serious of five shots were required by the owners.

Newby said he often gives vaccinations for horse, but now for cattle.

“I think the main precaution would be regarding your small animals,” said Newby. “Your dogs and other small animals definitely should be vaccinated because there are some rabid skunks out there.”

Newby Veterinary Clinic is located two miles west of Coffeyville.
