CANEY — There were no surprises in Tuesday’s Caney city election, other than the turnout of local voters was far less than anticipated.

Charlotte Scott-Schmidt, county clerk, said the lack of opposition in the four city council races likely accounted for an extremely low voter turnout in which only 65 total ballots were cast.

In ward 1, Michael Jones was elected to the council without opposition. Jones received a total of nine votes.

Gary Hawthorne was elected to the council in ward 2 by receiving 11 votes in an unopposed election. One voter in ward 2 issued a write-in vote for Larry Williams.

Incumbent councilor Jason Moore will return to the council in ward 3 after he received 16 votes in an unopposed race.

In Ward 4, April Coots received 22 votes without opposition, even though there were six write-in votes cast (four for Chad Bradford and one each for Erin Munday and M. Zoe Wahl).

Coots, Moore, Hawthorne and Jones will take the oath of office as city councilors at the council’s next meeting on Monday, April 19.
