INDEPENDENCE — Plans for asphalt being applied to 26 miles of county roads and chip-and-seal mixture applied to 22 miles of county road were revealed at Monday’s Montgomery County Commission meeting.
Robert Bever, public works director, presented his plans for asphalt and chip-and-seal mixture application during the summer months. He described the plan as being “aggressive” because of the amount of asphalt road to be covered with a new layer of asphalt.
“Typically, we try to apply asphalt to about 15 to 20 miles of county roads each summer,” he said. “This year, we’re pushing that number to more than 26 miles.”
The final plan for asphalt and chip-and-seal mixture application will be based on the price of oil when the road projects are underway. Depending on the price of oil at that time, the volume of asphalt and chip-and-seal may be reduced or increased, said Bever.
He also said the asphalt application will involve about a one-inch layer while previous year’s applications have been two to three inches in depth.
On the asphalt application list is county road 5700, commonly known as Olive Street Road that connects Cherryvale to an area east of Coffeyville. County road 5700 — from county road 2000 northeast of Coffeyville to county road 6600 at the Wilson County-Montgomery County line will receive a new layer of asphalt.
