3 arrested following drug investigation

INDEPENDENCE — Three Independence residents were arrested on Friday evening following a drug investigation, Sheriff Robert Dierks reported.

Dierks said deputies received information about Lueverta Morgan, age 47, selling narcotics from her apartment at 2325 N. 20th Place in Independence. Detectives began gathering information and evidence before issuing a search warrant at the resident on Friday, Feb. 5.

At the apartment, Morgan was taken into custody as was her son, Byron Morgan, age 23. Lueverta Morgan is expected to be charged with possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Dierks said that at the time of Lueverta’s arrest, an active arrest warrant was on file.

Byron Morgan is expected to be charged with possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

A 16-year-old juvenile also was discovered at the apartment when the search warrant was issued Friday. Officers said the juvenile, whose name was not revealed, was taken into custody and is expected to be charged with possession of marijuana.

Dierks said numerous items of drug paraphernalia, including marijuana, scales, packaging materials, and smoking tools, were discovered in the Morgan apartment.

Dierks said that while the drugs that were found in the house were not considered to be part of a larger drug operation, the drug investigation was necessary to keep drugs off the streets.

“Literally, you could watch kids playing in front of the apartment where these drugs were being sold,” said Dierks. “Those kids shouldn’t have to put up with this kind of activity where they live and play, and the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Department won’t tolerate it.”

Dierks reminds residents to use the toll-free Tipline service (1-800-498-1019) to report suspicious activity. Callers can remain anonymous.
