Car, cattle truck collide near U.S. 400-169

Two drivers were injured and 10 cattle had to be euthanized following a collision between a car and a cattle truck near the U.S. 400-169 highway junction north of Cherryvale on Sunday afternoon.

The Kansas Highway Patrol says a 2000 Oldsmobile Intrigue driven by Christian A. Sylvester, 18, of Wichita was eastbound on U.S. 400 highway when it went left of center and struck the semi-tractor trailer head on.

The semi, driven by Larry J. Crutsinger, 62, of Oak Ridge, Mo., was transporting 30 head of cattle. Ten of the 30 cattle were injured in the collision and had to be euthanized.

The semi went off the roadway and landed on its side.  Firefighters and other emergency personnel summoned Cherryvale veterinarian Paul Cotterill as well as other volunteers to remove the cattle from their truck and corral those that were roaming along the right of way.  A temporary cattle pen was created to hold the cattle until another semi tractor trailer could be obtained to transport them to their destination.

Sylvester and Crutsinger were transported to Labette Health in Parsons for treatment of injuries.
