Spectators to Friday’s Cherryvale/Humboldt basketball games will be treated to a special musical performance: the University of Kansas trumpet ensemble.
The 20-member KU trumpet group will perform the national anthem and also perform at the halftime of the varsity women’s basketball game in the CHS Gymnasium.
CHS senior Levi Allison has been taking trumpet lessons from KU band professor, Steve Liesring, who asked if the ensemble could perform for the Cherryvale crowd.

COFFEYVILLE — Due to an error in the City of Coffeyville’s billing system, customers were not charged the minimum electric and water charge or for sewer and trash service on bills mailed January 14, 2010.

Corrected bills have been mailed out.

This error affects only those customers with a utility bill due date of February 5.  Stickers have been placed on the bills to designate the corrected bill.

CANEY — The Caney Police Department has issued a $500.00 reward for information to the arrest and conviction of persons who broke as many as 70 windows at the Arrow Valve Company plant on North Foreman Street last Wednesday, Jan. 13.

Steve Berry of the Caney Police Department said as many as two people threw rocks at the windows, breaking as many as 70 in the process. Berry said the police were able get shoe prints of the suspects after the prints were made in the snow. It’s believed that the persons may have been carrying some sort of a bag or sack.

“We’ve got a few leads, but we need the public’s help,” said Berry. “The incident happened after 3:30 p.m., and before dark on January 13.”

INDEPENDENCE — Commissioner Tony Fowler was reappointed as chairman of the Montgomery County Commission on Monday, even though Fowler indicated reluctance to accept the reappointment.

At the commission’s annual reorganization meeting, commissioner Fred Brown nominated Fowler to serve another one-year term as commission chairman. Commissioner Larry McManus was absent from the meeting, thereby leaving the motion’s approval on the shoulders of Fowler.

LOS ANGELES, Calif. — An agreement has been reached in a federal lawsuit filed by a California production company against the Little House on the Prairie, Inc., an Independence-based organization that operates a historical attraction by the same name.

The agreement between Friendly Family Productions, LLC., and the Little House on the Prairie, Inc., was reached in November 2009 but will not be made official until early February when representatives of the two parties sign final settlement papers.
